Tiffany Green: The Art of Antique Patina on Bronze

Tiffany Green is a specific blue-green patina developed by Tiffany Studios to give bronze objects a weathered appearance. It is emphatically not a layer of paint, but the result of a carefully controlled chemical oxidation reaction that permanently discolors the metal to mimic the look of archaeological finds.

The Secret Recipe of Leslie Nash

The perfection of this patina was one of the studio's "strictly guarded secrets." The process was developed in 1897 by Leslie Nash, the chief scientist at Tiffany Studios. The process was extremely labor-intensive:

  • The Foundation: The bronze base was submerged for hours in a copper cyanide solution to create a stable base reaction.
  • The Application: A solution of copper nitrate and ammonium chloride was applied using a special stippling brush. This technique ensured a naturally mottled effect rather than a uniform color.
  • Finishing: After a drying time of ten hours, the bronze was polished and protected with a matte lacquer or a layer of beeswax.

Essential for the Collector

Experts consider the quality and depth of the Tiffany Green patina to be one of the most important indicators in identifying a genuine Tiffany lamp. It allows the bronze base to visually harmonize with the colors of the glass shade, such as with the famous Pond Lily or Dragonfly models.

Maintenance Tips for Patina

Because it is a delicate chemical product, an authentic patina should never be cleaned with abrasive agents or water-based cleaners. This can irreparably damage the oxidation layer.

  • Use only a soft, dry cloth for dust.
  • A dull patina can be carefully refreshed with a microscopic layer of beeswax or lemon oil.
