Within the Fancy Goods Department of Tiffany Studios, the "Zodiac Desk Set" was one of the most successful and recognizable product lines. The design, characterized by stylized symbols of the zodiac, combines the Art Nouveau aesthetic with a robust, almost archaeological appearance.
A Blend of Styles
The Zodiac design is often described as a mix of Art Nouveau and Celtic or Byzantine influences. In contrast to the lush floral lamps, the Zodiac line has a more restrained, masculine appearance. The twelve signs of the zodiac are incorporated into intertwined patterns that suggest the feel of ancient forged metal.
From Inkwell to Bookend
Collectors often strive to complete a full set. The Zodiac line consisted of dozens of different components, including:
- Inkwells: Often with a glass insert and a heavy bronze lid.
- Blotter Ends: The corners for a desk blotter.
- Paper Racks: For organizing letters and documents.
- Calendar holders and thermometers: Functional objects that gave every desk a luxurious look.

The Power of the Patina
Just as with the lamp bases, the quality of the patina is crucial to the value of Zodiac objects. Most pieces were executed in a rich, golden-brown finish or the iconic Tiffany Green. Because these objects were frequently handled, an authentic piece often shows natural wear on the raised parts of the relief, which adds to its character.
