In his quest for a perfect representation of nature, Louis Comfort Tiffany sometimes encountered the limitations of glass. For extremely fine details, such as the gossamer wings of an insect, he introduced Filigree: thin, etched copper or bronze applied over the glass like a fragile skeleton.
Technique: The Metal Overlay
Technically, filigree is an 'overlay'. The metal is chemically etched to create patterns too fine to be cut from glass. These metal plates are then soldered onto the glass segments before the entire shade receives its final patina. This technique is essential for two iconic models:
- Dragonfly Lamp: The filigree simulates the complex cellular structure in the wings of the dragonfly.
- Poppy Lamp: Here, filigree is used for the seed pods and the fine stamens in the heart of the poppy.
When the lamp is lit, the filigree creates a beautiful silhouette effect. The metal strategically blocks the light, causing the veins and structures to stand out sharply against the glowing glass.
