Although all attention is often focused on the glass, the heat cap is one of the most important functional components of a Tiffany lamp. This bronze cap rests on the opening at the top of the shade and serves as a ventilation system to safely dissipate the rising heat from the light bulbs.
Function and Safety
Without a proper heat cap, the heat from the bulbs would accumulate under the top rim of the shade. This can lead to the glass cracking or the solder seams weakening. The caps are therefore always provided with perforations, often in beautiful geometric patterns or in the shape of a 'pigtail' (curl) for smaller models.
Importance for Collectors
For the connoisseur, the heat cap is an 'identity card'. The color and depth of the patina on the cap must exactly match that of the lamp base. A cap that looks 'newer' or different often indicates a later reproduction or an incomplete lamp.
Maintenance tip: Ensure that the ventilation openings of your heat cap are free of dust for optimal heat dissipation.
